Ceramics Care Guide
Taking care of your handmade pottery will ensure it lasts for years.
Here are some simple guidelines:
-
Dishwasher Safe?
While some pieces are dishwasher safe, we always recommend hand washing to prolong their life.
-
Microwave Safe?
Your final outcomes are microwave safe unless otherwise stated. However, avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent cracks. This also applies to pottery pieces purchased from the shop.
-
Staining & Scratching:
Matte or unglazed pottery can absorb stains over time. Avoid leaving strong-coloured foods in them for extended periods.
-
Thermal Shock:
Avoid exposing pottery to extreme temperature changes (e.g., placing a cold dish in a hot oven) to prevent cracking.
-
Painting Air-Dry Clay
Taken your air-dry piece home after a class and fancy painting them at home? We recommend any water-based paints such as acrylic or poster paints. Water your paint down slightly and do two thinner coats rather than one thicker coat - this will give you a better finish and avoid a ‘patchy’ appearance. The clay is very absorbants so it’ dries quickly!
-
'Glaze' Air-Dry Pieces using Varnish
If you’ve taken your air-dry piece home rather than opting for a glaze fire, this will mean your finished piece is not water-tight or food-safe. You can however create the effect of a shiny glaze by applying any waterbased varnish, and this will double up as a protective sealant for your piece too. Avoid getting your piece wet.
